Bildersammlung zu Mahl und Essen im SpMA

Aus einer Email einer Mailingliste:

I just took a few moments to prowl through the French museums’ photo site for images of meals. Many of these are of historical or religious scenes but use clothes and customs of the painter’s time. Few are particularly ornate (bread and wine are sometimes all we see). Certainly, nothing suggesting the ornate sauces and stews found in period cookbooks appears, probably because roasts and loaves of bread simply looked less cluttered for painterly purposes. But some might be of interest nonetheless:

More Images:

Here’s a few more from various sources.

It stands to reason that the very LAST image I would find (from the Bridgeman Archive) shows something useful: what appears to be a freshly trimmed trencher being presented to a king who already has one set on two wooden? trenchers, with bits of cut food on it:

Along with, of course, ricotta:

What looks like a handsome reproduction is available for purchase:

I can’t tell if it’s cheaper than the Scriptorium’s (over $600!):

Otherwise, you can get the unwatermarked images on Wikimedia:

Including this early image of pasta:

Under the general heading of daily life, it actually includes one gently erotic image as well:

For anyone looking to make that special Valentine’s card…

Unfortunately, I can see no image of a full meal. Still, what a wonderful collection!
